Thomas Takes Night 1 of Louie Vermeil Classic

INDIANAPOLIS (Sep. 7, 2017) – Kevin Thomas Jr. scored his first USAC/CRA career win at the famed 10th Annual Louie Vermeil Classic. Thomas ran second to hometown favorite, Rico Abreu, back in 2014, and was able to reverse the roles this year to claim his own “Louie” victory in his family owned No.9k.

“It’s pretty cool to get a win at the Louie Vermeil,” said Thomas. “This was my third time running this race, and I finished second to Rico (Abreu) a couple years ago, so to get by him and get the win, at a place he’s so good at, really feels good.”

Thomas made the long haul from his home in Indianapolis to run the entire California Sprint Week with the USAC/CRA series. The Alabama native kicked off his West Coast swing at Calistoga Speedway. After timing in his KT Motorsports/Abreu Vineyards machine 5th out of 29 entries, Thomas would go on to dominate the second heat race, and earn a third-place starting spot in the main event. Thomas tracked down Abreu, finding the rubber early, and took the lead with four laps remaining.

“After a long three day drive out here, winning at Calistoga makes it all worth it,” explained Thomas. “I got lucky and found the rubber sooner than Rico, and was able to get the lead. Early in the race he was so far ahead that I didn’t think I had a chance. Hopefully, this will give us a good start to California Sprint Week, and maybe we can have a shot at both Sprint Week titles. I think that would be cool.”
