Thomas Claims 2017 Indiana Sprint Week Title

INDIANAPOLIS (Jul. 18, 2017) – After being robbed of his second victory of the week at Tri-State Speedway, Kevin Thomas Jr. raced his way to a 5th place finish at Lincoln Park Speedway, where he claimed the 2017 USAC Indiana Sprint Week Championship over race winner Robert Ballou.

Thomas had a 23-point lead heading into the final night’s feature event. A rough start at the beginning of the race shuffled Thomas back a few positions, and self-proclaimed mistakes throughout the race would eventually come to a halt when Thomas had time to regroup under red flag conditions.

“We were extremely tight, so I made some adjustments to my shocks, cleared my head and reminded myself to keep calm,” explained Thomas. “I’m used to pounding the cushion at Putnamville, and I just wasn’t running good enough to do that. I was trying not to think about points, and just work my way to the front, but I’d be lying if I said points weren’t in the back of my mind. Sometimes you like to see the red, sometimes you don’t. This time, I did. I had time to gather my thoughts and had to make a few decisions. I was able to get around enough cars to keep the points lead and beat Ballou.”

Thomas, who only finished outside the top ten once during the week, claimed a victory at Bloomington Speedway, and podium finishes at Lawrenceburg Speedway (3rd) and Tri-State Speedway (2nd). Thomas also scored two Fast Time awards, one at Kokomo Speedway and another at Lincoln Park Speedway. The newly crowned ISW Champ, also brought home the B7W Hard Charger award at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

“It’s been an incredible week,” said a relieved Thomas. “So much hard work and preparation goes into this week from myself, and my family, but mainly my guys. They both have day jobs, and are just as hard-working and passionate about this team as I am. They work harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. The second-place finish at Haubstadt didn’t go over well. I was mad, but they might have been madder than I was. It’s an intense week and you have to be intense about it. I won’t ever apologize for that. I’m extremely thankful to be sitting in this rocking chair with the two guys beside me, and everyone else that makes this team successful.”

Kevin Thomas Jr. would like to thank the following sponsors; Abreu Vineyards, KT Construction Services, DRC Chassis, Speedway Engines, CSI Shocks, Bell Helmets, Indy Metal Finishings, Jeff’s Jam It In Storage, Mobil1, BOSCH, Hinchman Racing Uniforms, Gridsport, High Side Design, and MPI.
