INDIANAPOLIS (Jun. 20, 2017) – Lebanon, Indiana’s, Spencer Bayston won Thursday night’s USAC/ARDC midget opener at Williams Grove Speedway. Bayston led the final 16 laps of the “Triple Crown Showdown” to capture his second midget win of the season, and the first victory for Keith Kunz Motorsports at the historic speedway.
“Going into the weekend I wasn’t really sure what to expect with a place like Williams Grove in a midget,” explained Bayston. “In the heat race it was tough to pass, but as the night went on the track got a lot slicker. When the feature came around the track had slickened off nicely. I started 8th and was able to work the middle of the track. I just carried speed better there, and off the corner I could drag race down the straightaway and have more momentum in the corner.”
With the passing points system instituted, instead of the usual qualifying method, Bayston started 7th in his heat race based on a draw, and would go on to pass two cars, finishing 5th. Lining up in the 8th position for the feature event, Bayston took the lead on lap 5 and held on for the next 15 circuits around the infamous speedway fending off second place, Brady Bacon, and KKM teammate and third place finisher, Ryan Robinson.
“Big Al, my car chief, had the car good enough that once I got to the lead I was able to start to cruise and get a good lead over the rest of the field,” stated Bayston. “On the restarts, I just had to make sure to not miss the bottom because I was pretty sure nobody was going to be able to drive around me on the top. It’s exciting to get my first Williams Grove win with it being such a historic track.”
Bayston and the Keith Kunz Motorsports team returned to Williams Grove Speedway the following night where he would finish 4th in the feature event. Bayston will switch gears for the next several days as he plans to run Ohio Speedweek with the All Star Circuit of Champions in his Swindell SpeedLab No.39.
Spencer Bayston would like to thank the following sponsors: Keith Kunz Motorsports, Toyota Racing, Bullet by Spike Chassis, Curb-Agajanian Curb Records, Simpson Race Products, ButlerBuilt Professional Seat Systems.
